Maldives Expands Sea-to-Air Cargo Service to Include Cambodia

The Maldives has expanded its sea-to-air cargo service to include transshipment cargo from Cambodia, further strengthening its role as a regional logistics hub linking Asia and Europe.
Cambodia has become the fourth country to use the service, joining India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Under the service, cargo is transported from Cambodia to the Maldives by sea before being transferred to air freight for onward delivery to destinations across Europe.
According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the first sea shipment from Cambodia has been successfully transferred to air cargo and dispatched to its destination. The shipment was handled by CEF Logistics and transported by Qatar Airways.
The sea-to-air cargo service is operated jointly by MACL and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). MACL said the successful handling of the first Cambodian shipment reflects the Maldives’ growing importance as a logistics hub connecting Asian markets with Europe.
The service handled 335 tonnes of cargo last month.
Sea-to-air cargo operations are widely used internationally as they combine the cost advantages of sea freight with the speed of air transport. The Maldives’ extensive international air connectivity is expected to provide further opportunities to expand the service.
