The Maldives is expected to record stronger tourist arrivals in the third and fourth quarters of 2026 compared with the earlier part of the year, according to Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen.
Speaking to reporters after a ceremony at Velana International Airport to welcome the country’s one-millionth tourist arrival of the year, Ameen said daily arrivals have now exceeded 5,000 visitors.
The government has set a target of attracting 2.5 million tourists in 2026. However, tourism growth was affected earlier in the year by unrest in the Middle East and subsequent disruptions to airline connectivity. The minister said arrivals have since improved following measures taken by the government to address these challenges.
Ameen noted that the Maldives recorded its highest-ever tourist arrivals last year and described reaching the one-million visitor mark in June as a positive sign. Although the milestone was achieved slightly later than in 2025, he said the industry remains on track for stronger performance in the second half of the year.
He said tourist arrivals during the third and fourth quarters are expected to surpass current levels, with the country aiming to move closer to its annual target by the end of the year. The minister added that arrivals could approach last year’s total of 2.24 million tourists.
As part of efforts to boost visitor numbers, the government is continuing promotional activities in key source markets. Tourism promotion events are scheduled to take place in China and Russia next month.
The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand air connectivity. A new airline commenced operations to the Maldives on the same day as the ceremony, while another carrier from France is expected to begin flights in the near future. The government is also working on additional air service agreements to attract more international airlines.
The one-millionth tourist to visit the Maldives this year was identified as Spanish national Artonio Espara, who arrived on a Qatar Airways flight.
