In 2002, the Maldives earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the highest divorce rate globally, with 10.97 divorces per 1,000 people.
Several factors contribute to this high divorce rate. Firstly, the divorce process in the Maldives is relatively straightforward and inexpensive. Additionally, increased access to education and career opportunities has empowered many Maldivian women, providing them with greater financial independence. This has enabled them to support themselves without relying on a partner, influencing societal dynamics and personal choices.
