The Maldives and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide equipment for fitness centres in 42 islands under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP).
The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel signed the MoU on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian signed on behalf of the Government of India. Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu signed on behalf of the implementing agency.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the foreign minister said the initiative represents an important investment in improving the health and well-being of communities in the outer islands. She said the project is expected to encourage more active lifestyles while expanding access to quality health and recreational facilities.
The sports minister said the fitness centres would provide opportunities for people of all ages to take part in recreational activities, contributing to improved physical health and stronger community engagement.
The establishment of fitness and recreation centres in all inhabited islands is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledge. The government has assigned Fenaka Corporation Limited and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to implement the projects.
