The initiative was officially launched yesterday during a ceremony held to observe World Thalassemia Day.

During the event, Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel highlighted the challenges previously faced by patients requiring bone marrow transplants. Historically, such procedures necessitated arduous journeys abroad for both the patient and the donor, imposing financial burdens and time constraints on families involved.

However, Dr. Khaleel expressed gratitude for the progress made, stating that, thanks to the initiative spearheaded by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, these tests can now be conducted locally.

Dr. Khaleel revealed that the first cross-match test in the Maldives was conducted on March 13, with subsequent phases scheduled for May or June. He lauded this achievement as a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to alleviate the suffering of patients afflicted with thalassemia.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of thalassemia patients, citing ongoing plans to establish a dedicated hospital catering specifically to their needs. Currently, 659 registered thalassemia patients in the Maldives rely on regular transfusions, according to statistics provided by Maldivian Blood Services.
