Maldives Looks to Hainan Partnership to Unlock Full China FTA Potential

The Maldives is seeking to expand fisheries exports to Hainan and make greater use of the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement as part of efforts to deepen economic cooperation with China.
Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed discussed the areas during an official visit to China, where he met Hainan Province Governor Liu Xiaoming.

The meeting focused on improving the use of opportunities available under the FTA and developing joint initiatives to support sustained economic growth. The discussions were also aimed at advancing the understandings reached between President Mohamed Muizzu and Chinese President Xi Jinping during President Muizzu’s state visit to China in 2024.
Minister Saeed said the Maldives welcomed the Chinese government’s readiness to support the country’s development priorities under the leadership of the two presidents.
During the visit, Minister Saeed also toured the Haiken Group Product Exhibition Hall and met Deputy General Manager Meng Xiaoliang and senior representatives of Hainan State Farms Investment Holding Group.
Those discussions covered cooperation in food security and regional connectivity, as well as opportunities to increase fisheries exports from the Maldives to Hainan.
