The primary objective of the project is to procure and supply quality medicine and pharmaceuticals to the State Trading Organization (STO) and strengthen the capacity of the public health sector. By doing so, the initiative seeks to achieve the broader target of ensuring access to healthcare for all in a sustainable manner.

The signed agreement serves as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to the continuity of the Aasandha scheme, a universal health insurance program that provides Maldivian citizens with essential healthcare services. Furthermore, it aligns with the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3): Good Health and Well-being, which emphasizes the importance of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.

This partnership with the UNDP highlights the Maldivian government’s dedication to addressing the challenges in the public healthcare sector by collaborating with reputable development partners. Through this joint effort, the government aims to overcome hurdles related to the procurement and accessibility of quality medicine, ultimately improving healthcare services and contributing to the well-being of its citizens.

The agreement signifies a step forward in the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the overall quality and efficiency of the healthcare system. By leveraging UNDP’s global health procurement services, the government anticipates substantial cost savings in medicine procurement, enabling them to allocate resources more effectively and efficiently within the healthcare sector.

The project’s comprehensive approach encompasses not only the procurement and supply of medicine but also the development of local capacity within the public health sector. By focusing on building expertise and knowledge, the government aims to strengthen the foundations of the healthcare system, ensuring long-term sustainability and continuous improvement.

The collaboration between the Government of Maldives and the UNDP holds the promise of transforming the healthcare landscape in the nation. As the partnership progresses, it is expected to yield significant positive outcomes, providing the Maldivian population with greater access to high-quality medicine, improved healthcare services, and a healthier future for all.
