Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital has announced the first successful birth through in-vitro fertilisation at the National Fertility Centre of Dharumavantha Hospital.

The hospital reported that both the mother and the newborn are in good health. It described the birth as a significant achievement for the national healthcare system and an important step in expanding access to reproductive healthcare services within the country.

The Chief Executive Officer of Dharumavantha Hospital, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, said the successful IVF birth represents renewed hope for families seeking fertility treatment locally. He acknowledged the efforts of the National Fertility Centre team and other hospital departments that supported the process.

He noted that, prior to the establishment of the centre, families were required to travel overseas for IVF treatment, often facing considerable financial and emotional strain. He also welcomed the availability of IVF services in the Maldives under the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, making the treatment accessible free of charge.

The National Fertility Centre was officially opened on 15 November 2024 as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to introduce advanced fertility treatment services within the country. In addition to infertility treatment, the centre offers specialised reproductive healthcare services, including an endometriosis and pelvic clinic established at IGMH.

The government has stated that strengthening reproductive healthcare services is a key priority, viewing them as essential to building strong families and promoting a healthy society.
