The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported five new measles cases over the past week, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Maldives to 20.

In an update issued yesterday, the agency urged members of the public to seek medical attention if they develop a fever accompanied by a red rash or spots on the body, which are common symptoms of measles.

The HPA advised individuals seeking treatment for suspected measles to wear a face mask and avoid using public transport when travelling to healthcare facilities.

The agency also instructed anyone tested for suspected measles to remain isolated at home until further guidance is provided by health authorities.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation and issue public health advisories as the number of cases increases.

The latest update comes a week after India donated 20,000 doses of measles vaccine and nearly three tonnes of medical supplies to support the Maldives’ response to the outbreak.

The donation was formally handed over during a ceremony at the Ministry of Health, where Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, presented the supplies on behalf of the Government of India. Health Minister Geela Ali accepted the donation on behalf of the Maldivian government.

Health authorities have continued to encourage vaccination and early medical consultation as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
