Maldivian Airlines Announces New Routes to China with A330-200 Launch

Maldivian Airlines, the national carrier of the Maldives, has unveiled new routes to China set to begin in January 2025, marking a major milestone with the introduction of A330-200 wide-body aircraft to its fleet.

The new routes will include direct flights from Male to Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu.

The announcement was made during an exclusive launch event in Beijing, which brought together prominent figures from both nations, including government officials, travel agents, industry representatives, and media partners. The event was a key part of a China roadshow aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing tourism and travel opportunities.

The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Captain Mohamed Ameen, attended the event and underscored the importance of the new routes in his speech:

“The launch of these new routes with A330 wide-body aircraft is a testament to the strong partnership between the Maldives and China. China has been a key tourism market for us, and these flights will strengthen connectivity, foster collaboration, and contribute to the growth of our tourism sector.”

Maldivian Airlines’ Managing Director, Ibrahim Ilyas, elaborated on the airline’s strategic vision:

“With the introduction of the A330-200, we are thrilled to announce the launch of direct flights from Malé to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. These routes will offer enhanced comfort, convenience, and efficiency for our passengers. We have tailored our onboard experience to cater to the preferences of Chinese travellers, including Mandarin-speaking crew and personalised catering and services. This route is a significant milestone as we deepen the connections between the Maldives and China.”

The event featured a presentation highlighting the economic and strategic benefits of the new routes. These flights aim to meet the increasing demand for travel between the two countries, potentially boosting tourism and business travel from the Chinese market.

The addition of the A330-200 aircraft will significantly expand Maldivian Airlines’ capabilities for long-haul flights, offering greater passenger capacity and extended range. Currently operating a fleet of 24 aircraft, the airline aims to position itself as a key player in the growing travel market between the Maldives and Asia.
