Maldivian Rufiyaa Symbol Enters Unicode Standard

The Unicode Consortium has officially incorporated the Maldivian Rufiyaa currency symbol into version 18.0 of the Unicode Standard, says the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The update assigns the code point U+20C2 to the Rufiyaa symbol, which MMA first introduced in 2022.

By adding the symbol to the universal digital character set, tech platforms can now render the currency mark consistently across operating systems, websites, mobile applications, and software programs worldwide. Previously, software developers and digital platforms lacked a standardized character code for the Maldivian currency, often relying on custom graphics or standard text abbreviations.

MMA highlights the practical impact of the technical milestone, noting that this marks a major milestone for the country’s digital representation. They further state that the integration ensures the currency symbol becomes easily accessible and usable across everyday digital tools. The authority claims that, with the inclusion of the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol in this standard, the symbol can now be used uniformly across websites, mobile applications, and various digital platforms.

The central bank expresses its sincere gratitude to the technical team that led the effort to secure the symbol’s placement within the international Unicode registry.

MMA additionally emphasizes that the Unicode Standard 18.0 release ensures that software vendors—including global tech companies that produce desktop and mobile operating systems—can integrate the Rufiyaa symbol into system fonts and keyboard layouts during upcoming system updates.
