MV+ News Desk | September 26, 2024

Male’ City Council has signed an agreement with Rapid Engineering Solutions to source equipment and materials for a new cat facility.

The contract, valued at MVR 210,036.61, is part of an effort to manage the growing stray cat population in Male’. The project, located in Hulhumale’ Phase 3 (Farukolhufushi area), is a collaborative effort between the City Council and the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare aimed at addressing the rising stray cat population in Male’.

Public concerns have grown in months over hygiene and the potential spread of diseases due to the increasing number of stray cats in the area. Animal welfare organisations have also voiced their worries about the high rate of abandonment, which leaves cats vulnerable to disease outbreaks within the stray population.

The facility is being built on a 5,000 sq. ft. plot of land provided by the Housing Development Corporation. With the foundation laid in March, the project is in its final stages of completion and is expected to be operational soon.
