Malé City Council has opened a tender for private parties to finance, develop and operate public pay toilets at four locations in Malé under long-term lease agreements.

According to the council, the project covers the redevelopment of Pay Toilet 6 near Atoll Vehi (Atoll Shop), Pay Toilet 7 adjacent to the Malé City Council office on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, a pay toilet plot in Henveiru and another near the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The selected parties will be required to finance and develop the facilities at their own expense. Interested bidders can request further information and submit proposals under the terms published in the government gazette.

Malé City Mayor Adam Azim said the project would prioritise accessibility and convenience for persons with disabilities and special needs, while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. He added that the redeveloped facilities would include modern changing rooms and separate sections for men and women.

Pay toilets previously operated in several parts of Malé, particularly during the early 2000s, but many later fell into disrepair as maintenance and operations declined. The new initiative seeks to redevelop some of these sites and restore public toilet facilities in key areas of the capital.
