The council stated that a special study had been conducted to assess the condition of Sultan Park, which was first opened in 2016. It also noted that a contractor had already been sought for the renovation work. The council highlighted that the park had not undergone any refurbishment since its inauguration and that none of its facilities are currently usable.

Regarding Rasfannu Beach, the council confirmed that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had issued the necessary environmental permits to replenish the sand. Work is expected to begin next week.

The council also revealed that although the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) had been awarded a contract to manage the beach, the agreement was cancelled due to unsatisfactory performance. The council stated that it would continue with renovation efforts despite the challenges.

President Muizzu, who served as Malé’s mayor when both Rasfannu Beach and Sultan Park were initially developed, described them as important recreational spaces for residents in the congested capital. He visited Rasfannu in the morning and later shared his concerns regarding its current state.

Reports indicate that renovation efforts at Rasfannu were delayed due to disputes between the city council and MTCC. The council stated that while it is responsible for maintaining parks and public squares, the management of Rasfannu Beach had been handed over to MTCC. The company was allowed to operate a kiosk at the site in exchange for maintenance responsibilities.

The council further disclosed that, instead of minor repairs, significant infrastructure work would be required at the site. However, it lacks the necessary budget to carry out the work.
