President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that more than 23,000 jobs have been created across the public and private sectors during his administration’s first two years in office.
In a message marking International Workers’ Day, the President outlined government policies aimed at strengthening the national workforce, with a particular emphasis on vocational education and skills development. He highlighted the establishment of the Maldives’ first vocational high school as part of these efforts.
The President said the government has introduced a range of training programmes in sectors linked to national development, while also expanding access to grants and concessional loans intended to support skills development and talent growth.
He stated that the administration maintains policies designed to protect the rights of both Maldivian and expatriate workers across all sectors, while also supporting the development of the labour industry. The President also pointed to progress in securing international market access for Maldivian products through partnerships with major e-commerce platforms.
According to the address, the government has strengthened measures to ensure expatriate workers operate within the legal framework. The President further highlighted initiatives aimed at increasing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities and legislative changes allowing individuals to remain in employment beyond the age of 65.
He also stated that the administration has worked to address long-standing issues affecting workers across different sectors and levels, while maintaining direct engagement with workers to address concerns.
The President called on citizens to support the implementation of measures aimed at expanding employment and professional opportunities and encouraged all capable Maldivians to actively participate in the workforce.
Despite the reported increase in job creation, the administration has faced criticism over the number of political appointees. President Muizzu had previously pledged to limit political appointments to 700, although critics allege the figure has risen into the thousands.
