A man has been fined a total of MVR 55,000 after breaking into a Redbox office in Malé and stealing valuables, with the court also finding him guilty of consuming alcohol.

The Criminal Court case was brought by the State, represented by the Prosecutor General’s Office, against Abdulla Azaan Majeed of G. Thalvaarey.

According to the court’s verdict, Azaan entered the Redbox office on Hadeebee Magu at around 2:59 am on 27 June 2019 and stole two safes, a tablet, an iPhone X, and a smartwatch. He also used an iron bar to damage the office’s exterior door.

Under a plea agreement reached between Azaan and the Prosecutor General’s Office, the six-month-and-25-day custodial sentence prescribed for the theft offence was converted to a fine of MVR 41,000.

In addition to the main theft penalty, the court separately fined him MVR 2,600 for damaging property and MVR 10,800 for trespassing by entering an unauthorised location. Azaan also admitted to consuming alcohol during court proceedings, resulting in a further MVR 600 fine.

The verdict noted that Azaan had previously spent 11 days in detention during the investigation and trial process.

The court ordered him to settle the full MVR 55,000 in combined fines with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within 12 months.
