Man Remanded in Custody for 15 Days Following Assault on Elderly Woman

A 44-year-old Maldivian man has been remanded in custody for 15 days following allegations that he trespassed into a home in R. Angolhitheemu, sexually assaulted a 72-year-old woman and threatened to kill her.

The Maldives Police Service confirmed to MV+ today that a court has ordered the man to remain in custody for 15 days as police continue their investigation.

Police said the incident was reported at around 8:30pm on Sunday.

The woman was taken to Angolhitheemu Health Centre for medical treatment following the assault and has since been discharged, according to police.

Police said officers executed a court warrant at approximately 9:57pm on Monday and arrested the suspect in connection with the case.

Following his appearance in court, a magistrate ordered that he be remanded in custody for 15 days.
