A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for trafficking dimorphine, according to the Maldives Police Service.

The individual has been identified as Ali Saaim of Sheeraazy in Feydhoo. In addition to the custodial sentence, he has been fined MVR 50,000. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday.

Saaim was arrested on 19 August 2024 on suspicion of drug possession and trafficking. Police stated that the investigation was completed and forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on 16 October 2024, after which formal charges were filed.

The conviction forms part of ongoing efforts by authorities, in collaboration with relevant agencies, to combat drug trafficking across the country. Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the strictest legal action against individuals involved in drug-related offences.

Under Maldivian law, drug trafficking carries severe penalties, including life imprisonment, with courts in recent cases also imposing the death penalty on individuals convicted of large-scale drug smuggling.
