A 37-year-old man from Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo has been sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000 after he was found guilty of using an agricultural plot in Gaafu Dhaalu Gan to store and deal illicit substances.
The verdict, delivered by the Gadhdhoo Magistrate Court under Section 105 of the Drugs Act, convicted Ali Shazeen of carrying out a regulated activity without a permit. Prosecutors successfully established both charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) originally launched the investigation on August 10, 2021, after receiving reports that Shazeen was utilising the agricultural land to store and deal illicit substances. Executing a search warrant at the site, officers uncovered alcohol and suspected illegal drugs.
The dual charges were filed after the case file was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on September 1, 2021, following an investigation by MPS.
