The Criminal Court has sentenced a man to eight months and 12 days in prison for stealing a wallet belonging to a Sri Lankan employee at a takeaway outlet in Malé.
Safwan Ali, of Lucky House, Thimarafushi, Thaa Atoll, was convicted of theft following a trial before Presiding Judge Muzammil Nasir.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on 29 January this year at approximately 14:23.
State prosecutors told the court that Safwan entered the Kukuru Takeaway establishment opposite City Park and stole a wallet lying on the counter. The wallet contained MVR 180, USD 220, and bank cards.
During preliminary proceedings, Safwan denied the charge, maintaining that he had neither entered the establishment nor committed the theft on the day in question.
Delivering the verdict, Judge Muzammil ruled that the state had presented sufficient witness testimony and supporting evidence to establish the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt before handing down the custodial sentence.
