MDP Calls on Government for Talks on Economic Policies

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called on the government to hold talks on the country’s financial and economic challenges and reconsider its economic policies, including the requirement for resorts to convert 40 per cent of their foreign currency earnings.
The party warned that if the government fails to engage and change course, it would take direct political action demanding President Muizzu’s resignation.

During an emergency meeting of the MDP National Congress on Monday night, 33 out of 34 members present endorsed a resolution accusing the current administration of implementing reckless fiscal measures. The resolution states that government policies are driving a continuous decline in the country’s economic stability, exacerbating severe foreign currency shortages, and increasing living costs for the public.
Under the terms of the motion, the MDP is urging the government to come to the negotiating table to discuss remedial measures for the nation’s financial and fiscal situation. However, party officials confirmed that if the administration fails to respond or reform its policies, opposition supporters will initiate progressive street-level demonstrations aimed at securing the President’s resignation. Reports indicate that the party has not yet published a specific timetable for the planned protests.
During the debate, council members raised concerns over rising inflation, black-market foreign currency rates, and newly introduced financial controls, asserting that public dissatisfaction has reached a critical stage.
In a separate vote conducted during the same session, the MDP National Congress overwhelmingly passed a second resolution to manage its internal governance. Out of 34 participating members, 33 voted to extend the current term of the fourth National Congress until 31 January 2027 at the latest. The resolution mandates that internal National Congress elections must take place within one month of the party congress, or by the end of January next year at the latest, a move party members described as necessary to bolster administrative stability and internal democratic processes.
