MDP National Council Announces Nationwide Protests Against Gov’t on Thursday
Former president Nasheed chaired the MDP national council assembly last night for the first time since his election.
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced nationwide protests on Thursday, accusing President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration of failing to uphold laws and regulations.
The decision was approved by an overwhelming majority during an MDP National Council meeting held last night. Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who was elected MDP chairperson on Friday, chaired the meeting. It was the first National Council assembly held since his election to the party’s top organisational post.
The resolution, proposed by the party secretariat, outlined several concerns the party says have prompted the demonstrations.
According to the resolution, the MDP is protesting what it described as the suspension of development projects across the country, the dismissal of employees for political reasons, and the filing of politically motivated cases against individuals.
The National Council also adopted a separate resolution last night to work with island councils to resume and complete stalled development projects in order to ensure the continued delivery of essential services to residents.
During the meeting, Nasheed called on party members to encourage greater public participation in Thursday’s demonstrations.
The MDP is the second-largest party in the Maldives and the country’s main opposition party. The planned protests come amid increasing political tensions between the opposition and the government over governance, public spending, and development priorities.
