The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s National Council convened last night to address their recent electoral setbacks, resolving to conduct an in-depth analysis of their performance in both the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

During a press briefing following the meeting, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail announced that the party’s leadership had reached a consensus to examine the factors contributing to their electoral defeats and formulate a strategic plan for the future.

Responding to queries from journalists regarding allegations of negative campaigning by MDP, Fayyaz defended the party’s stance, asserting that as an opposition party, it was their duty to highlight concerns and hold the ruling party accountable.

Similar concerns were raised by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) during the elections, accusing MDP of focusing more on criticism than on constructive campaigning.

MDP’s electoral performance in the recent parliamentary election fell short of expectations, securing only 12 out of 89 contested seats. In contrast, PNC, along with aligned independent candidates, clinched a super majority in the 20th People’s Majlis with a combined total of 77 seats.

Despite facing criticism over their campaign approach, Fayyaz underscored the importance of conducting a thorough analysis to ascertain the validity of such claims.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and MDP President Abdulla Shahid refuted allegations of anti-campaigning, stating that the party’s efforts have always been geared towards informing the public and advocating for transparency.
