The Maldivian Medical Association (MMA) has issued a statement condemning the dissemination of defamatory images and comments targeting healthcare professionals across social media platforms.

In their official communication, the Medical Association highlighted the detrimental consequences of circulating unfounded rumours, stressing the potential negative impact on the wider public, particularly those reliant on essential health services within society.

Moreover, such actions erode trust in the healthcare system, prompting a resurgence in the costly practice of seeking treatment abroad.

Acknowledging the existing challenges faced by healthcare workers, the association emphasised the potential exacerbation of frustration among professionals, posing significant obstacles to staff retention within the sector.

The MMA appealed to the community for support in enabling healthcare providers to continue their vital work uninterrupted, cautioning against the dissemination of unverified information on social media platforms. They urged individuals to exercise discretion and thoroughly evaluate facts before sharing content online.
