South Galolhu constituency MP Meekail Naseem has called on the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group (PG) to abstain from granting parliamentary approval to the recently appointed Housing Minister, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed.

Expressing concern, Meekail alleged that the minister’s statements during yesterday’s press conference on housing in the Male’ area indicate a potential strategy to limit citizens’ access to housing in the capital.

Meekail strongly criticized the Housing Minister’s announcement that the current government would not uphold the allocation of land and flats granted up to the second round of elections. He highlighted President Muizzu’s campaign promises, asserting that there were commitments not to revoke any land or flats allocated by the preceding administration.

During yesterday’s press conference, Minister Haidar stated that the list of beneficiaries under the Gedhoruveriya scheme requires reevaluation in light of numerous complaints about the fairness of point allocations and an ongoing investigation by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). The minister assured that the list would be revisited, taking into account the recommendations provided by the ACC.

Meekail expressed apprehension about the potential relocation of Male’ residents to a more distant location accessible by crossing the Vaadhoo sea, characterizing it as an unfavorable decision.

He portrayed the government’s actions as an alleged attempt to limit housing opportunities for Male’ residents.

Meekail called on MDP and other party MPs to exercise caution in granting approval to such ministers, urging MDP not to enforce unanimous support in matters of ministerial approval.
