MET Office Issues Advisory for Seafarers as Rough Seas Expected

The Maldives Meteorological Service issued an advisory today, warning seafarers of rough seas as weather conditions are expected to worsen across the country.

The forecast predicts thunderstorms and showers in the northern and southern regions, with similar conditions expected in the central provinces.

Wind speeds are anticipated to range from 15 to 25 mph in the northwest to southern atolls, while other areas may experience winds between 10 and 20 mph. Wind gusts could reach up to 45 mph during thunderstorms.

The southern seas are expected to become moderately to increasingly rough, with similar conditions anticipated in the northern and central seas.

Wave heights are projected to be between 4 to 7 feet in the southern regions and 3 to 6 feet in the northern and central regions.

Seafarers are advised to exercise caution and remain informed through the latest weather updates.

MMS categorises weather alerts as follows:

  • White alert: Alert Level 1
  • Yellow advisory: Alert Level 2
  • Orange warning: Alert Level 3
  • Red warning: Alert Level 4
