The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has imposed an immediate ban on the import, sale, and use of two medicines after detecting the presence of diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG), harmful chemicals, in the products.

The affected medicines are:

  • Mefnac Suspension 50mg/5ml (Mefenamic Acid) – manufactured by Efroze Chemical Industries (Pvt) Ltd, Pakistan
  • Axcel Mefenamic Acid Suspension 125mg/5ml (Mefenamic Acid) – manufactured by Kotra Pharma (M) Sdn. Bhd, Malaysia

In response, the authority has suspended the import, sale, and consumption of these medicines until further testing results are received from overseas laboratories.

The MFDA has emphasised the importance of public safety and urged consumers to avoid using the affected medicines.
