Minister Ihusaan Orders Inquiry into Yameen’s Arson Claims Over 2024 Green Building Fire

Following public statements made by former President Abdulla Yameen on September 5, 2026, alleging that the December 2024 Green Building complex fire was an act of arson, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has instructed relevant authorities to investigate the claims.

The blaze destroyed the complex on Ameenee Magu, which housed three key government bodies: the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development, the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, and the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.

Speaking at the People’s National Front (PNF) gathering, Yameen asserted that the complex was deliberately set ablaze to destroy records related to alleged corruption. He further claimed that a close associate of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was responsible for the incident and accused the police of withholding action despite knowing the perpetrator’s identity.

Minister Ihusaan reiterated that a joint investigation by the Maldives Police Service and international experts concluded the fire was caused by an electrical failure, noting that no evidence of criminal wrongdoing was found.

To address these claims, Minister Ihusaan requested that the Maldives Police Service clarify the details in Yameen’s possession and explore any further leads, while simultaneously asking the National Integrity Commission to investigate the allegations leveled against the police force.

While official findings maintain that the incident was caused by an electrical failure rather than arson, the case has been referred for further review to thoroughly address the allegations.
