The Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, formally opened the Tourism Symposium at WTM London 2026,’ calling on sector stakeholders to present the nation’s rapidly broadening travel portfolio to the world.

Addressing senior hoteliers, industry representatives, and policy officials, the Minister stressed that the Maldivian hospitality sector is moving beyond its historical reliance on single-island luxury resorts to cater to modern global travel patterns.

“Maldives tourism has now evolved to provide a diverse menu of experiences, each catered to the changing preferences and expectations of visitors,” Minister Ameen said during his keynote address. “Communicating this effectively is our shared mission”.

Elaborating on the country’s strategic trajectory, Minister Ameen emphasised that maintaining a competitive edge requires sector-wide adaptation to varied traveller demographics, ranging from local island guesthouse stays and marine adventure tourism to cultural and eco-conscious travel. He underscored that tourism must serve as an inclusive economic engine, balancing robust commercial growth with sound environmental stewardship and community benefit.

Throughout the event, the Minister took an active role across round-table sessions and high-level working panels. He joined delegates in evaluating source-market intelligence from key visitor hubs—including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, India, China, the Middle East, and the United States—focusing on changing consumer spending behaviours and emerging travel segments.

The Minister also endorsed industry appeals to treat destination promotion as an essential capital investment rather than an administrative expense, recognising the intense marketing competition from rival island destinations.

The symposium concluded with delegates drafting operational frameworks based on the day’s working groups. These recommendations will feed into the Ministry of Tourism’s broader policy roadmap to guide national destination management and product diversification over the coming financial year.
