Ministry of Economic Development and Trade Initiates Copyright Act Amendment Process

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has announced its intention to amend the Maldives Copyright and Related Rights Act. The proposed amendments aim to enhance the protection afforded to creative works. This initiative is part of the roadmap to be completed within the first 14 weeks of H.E. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s term.
The Ministry is presently in the process of drafting a bill to amend the existing Act. The objective is to establish a more favourable environment for creators of original works. The public is invited to provide suggestions or comments on the current legislation.

Comments on the Act can be submitted to the ministry via mail at legal@trade.gov.mv by 14:00 on 10 December 2023.
