The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has issued a sharp rebuke of the President’s Office following the selective invitation of news outlets to a press conference hosted by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The advocacy group condemned the move as a direct violation of press freedom and the public’s right to information, urging the executive office to guarantee equal access for all registered news outlets. When questioned, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu distanced himself from the decision, maintaining that he does not oversee the issuance of press invitations.

As a result, several prominent independent platforms including news outlet Dhauru were excluded entirely from the event. Adhadhu news outlet has been banned from attending press briefings and events organised by the President’s Office.

The decision has drawn swift condemnation from press freedom advocates and media watchdogs, who warn that targeted gatekeeping at government briefings directly undermines public transparency.
