Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas has urged the confiscation of land allocated under the previous administration’s Binveriya scheme, asserting that it was granted illegally.

During today’s debate on the Urban Development Bill in Parliament, Abbas, Vice President of the MDA, questioned the legality of these land allocations, particularly those involving lagoon areas.

Abbas argued that there was no legal basis for transferring lagoon land and criticised the current government’s failure to address these irregularities.

In his parliamentary speech, Abbas expressed frustration over the recurring pattern of new administrations accusing their predecessors of corruption without holding those responsible accountable. He called for the state to seize property acquired through such illegal activities.

The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has maintained that the land allocations were authorised by the forest authorities and labelled the distribution in the Malay area as one of the most significant scandals in recent history.

The previous government’s Binveriya scheme allocated 9,003 plots to residents of Male’ city, divided among Hulhumale’ (1,351 plots), Gulhifalhu (2,219 plots), and Giravaru Falhu (5,433 plots).
