Mahchangolhi North MP Ibrahim Mohamed has questioned comments by British High Commissioner to the Maldives Nick Low regarding the police raid on Adhadhu News, drawing comparisons to journalist deaths in Gaza.
Low had described the raid as “troubling” in a post on X, stating that it raises concerns over media freedom and does not align with the Maldives’ commitments to Commonwealth standards.
In response, Ibrahim Mohamed, who is also the brother of the first lady, Sajidhaa Mohamed, cited figures from the Gaza Health Ministry and the Committee to Protect Journalists, pointing to reported journalist deaths in the ongoing conflict and questioning the absence of similar concern.
The raid on Adhadhu’s newsroom took place on Monday night, with police seizing equipment used in daily operations, according to the media outlet. The authorities has also seized the passports and imposed travel bans on the outlet’s CEO Hussain Fiyaz and managing editor Hassan Mohamed.
The development follows the release of Adhadhu’s documentary “Aisha” last month, which contains allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu. The president has denied the claims and said he would pursue legal action against those involved.
