MPL Launches Internal Investigation Into Landing Craft Accident

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched an internal investigation into the capsizing of a landing craft near the company’s port in Malé on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 3:44 p.m., resulting in six people being taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment. Among them were four Maldivians and two foreign nationals.
A Bangladeshi national and a Maldivian man died while receiving treatment, while the remaining four individuals have since been discharged from hospital.
MPL confirmed that an internal investigation had been initiated to determine the cause of the accident and said further details would be shared following the findings. The company also extended its condolences to the families of the two employees who lost their lives.
The victims were identified as Masud Hossain, 32, a Bangladeshi national who had worked with MPL as a labourer for more than three years, and Ali Aflah Abdulla, 25, from GA. Gemanafushi, who joined the company in December last year.
MPL stated that it continues to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident and will release updates once the investigation concludes.
