The Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) has announced their intention to nominate Faris Maumoon as the party’s presidential candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections.
The party plans to formally submit Faris Maumoon’s candidacy to the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) during the upcoming week. This decision comes in the wake of the EMC’s previous actions to dissolve MRM, citing inadequate membership numbers as the reason.
However, the Civil Court intervened and issued a stay order on the Commission’s decision. MRM have accused the ECM of corruption, alleging that the dissolution of MRM reflects the extent of corruption within the country and the government’s perceived inability to uphold the rule of law.
In light of these developments, the ECM has commenced the candidacy submission period for the upcoming elections, which is scheduled to conclude at 2:00pm on August 7, 2023.
Prospective candidates are required to complete application forms and submit all necessary documents to the ECM at Dharubaaruge. The submission process will be open from 9:00am to 2:00pm on weekdays and from 2:00pm to 4:00pm on Fridays.
Faris Maumoon served as Minister of State for Economic Development from November 2013 to June 2015, and he is a son of former long-serving president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
