Muizzu Assumes Leadership of PPM-PNC Coalition Following Yameen’s Departure
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assumed the leadership of the primary ruling coalition, comprising the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC).
This development follows the decision of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to step down from the coalition.
The appointment of Muizzu as the leader of PPM-PNC took place during a joint senate meeting last night. Senator Mohamed Shakeel, representing PPM, announced on X that Muizzu secured the position with unanimous consensus within the joint senate.
Founded by Yameen in 2019 as a contingency, PNC emerged as a coalition partner for PPM after the resolution of the ownership dispute between Yameen and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Muizzu entered the presidential election fray after the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) rejected Yameen’s candidacy due to a money laundering conviction, a decision later affirmed by the Supreme Court.
Yameen refrained from endorsing Muizzu until the final moments. However, less than a week into Muizzu’s administration, Yameen severed ties with PPM and announced plans to establish a new political party, the People’s National Front (PNF).
