Muizzu Discusses Renewable Energy Expansion With World Bank Regional VP

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and World Bank Regional Vice President for South Asia Johannes Zutt discussed expanding renewable energy as part of efforts to reduce the Maldives’ dependence on imported fossil fuel and lower fuel import expenditure.

Zutt paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu this morning at the President’s official residence, Mulee’aage, where they discussed the Government’s development priorities, including digitalisation and strengthening the energy sector.

The President highlighted the need for affordable, reliable and sustainable energy solutions and said expanding renewable energy could help reduce expenditure on imported fuel.

Zutt reaffirmed the World Bank’s readiness to support the Maldives in areas where it can provide assistance and noted the potential for renewable energy to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel and associated vulnerabilities.

The meeting also covered opportunities for continued World Bank support in the health sector and other development priorities.

Muizzu stressed the need to reduce expenditure while ensuring development efforts remain sustainable and responsive to the country’s long-term needs.

The President also highlighted the Government’s commitment to ongoing and future development projects and the role of the private sector in complementing these efforts.
