Amendments to the rules governing political parties now allow multiple individuals to apply for the formation of a political party, departing from the previous stipulation that restricted the initiation process to only one person.

Ismail Habeeb, Vice Chairman of the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM), announced the revision during a news conference today, highlighting that the decision was reached after extensive consultations with various stakeholders.

Under the revised rules, multiple individuals can now jointly submit an application to establish a political party. The application must include a clear copy of both sides of the ID card for each person seeking to form the party, along with a criminal record form.

Furthermore, the updated regulations specify that written permission to form a party must be granted within seven days of application submission.

Once granted permission by the ECM, a political party can proceed to formal registration upon submitting a petition with a minimum of 3,000 signatures. It is important to note that only parties boasting a membership of 10,000 or more will be eligible for state funding.
