The Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has completed and officially commissioned water and sewerage systems on the islands of Fiyoaree and Vaadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The new systems are expected to ensure continuous access to safe drinking water and reliable sanitation services for residents, thereby supporting broader efforts to improve public health and living standards in the southern atolls.

A delegation comprising senior representatives from the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Fenaka Corporation, and MWSC visited both islands to oversee the commissioning and inspect the completed works.

Key features of the project include a newly established water supply network with dedicated facility buildings, a fully integrated distribution system, and household-level service connections. To enhance system durability and resilience, MWSC has also installed boreholes, reject lines, storage tanks, and essential water treatment infrastructure.

In addition to the water systems, the company delivered comprehensive sewerage solutions consisting of main pipeline networks, pumping lines, sea outfalls, and multiple pumping stations. Household connections were finalised with suitable junction fittings to ensure seamless integration into the overall network. To support the long-term sustainability of these systems, MWSC will provide water quality testing equipment for both islands and a dedicated vehicle for maintenance and servicing of the sewerage infrastructure.

The project, commissioned by the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and implemented by MWSC, represents a significant investment in essential utilities. Infrastructure works on Fiyoaree amounted to USD 3.89 million, while the project on Vaadhoo was valued at USD 3.96 million.

The completion of these projects forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader infrastructure development agenda. The administration has committed to resolving previous delays in the delivery of water and sewerage projects and ensuring their implementation under full state supervision.
