MWSC Partners with FLOCEAN AS for Subsea Desalination Feasibility Study

MV+ News Desk | August 18, 2024

The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FLOCEAN AS to explore the potential of subsea desalination technology in the Maldives.

This collaborative effort aims to assess the feasibility of using natural ocean pressure to improve clean water provision in the archipelago.

The study seeks to integrate this cutting-edge technology into MWSC’s infrastructure to address the unique challenges posed by the nation’s dispersed islands, limited land availability, and vulnerability to climate change.

The Maldives currently relies on energy-intensive desalination processes that are costly and environmentally taxing. Subsea desalination, which leverages natural ocean pressure at depths of 500 metres, is anticipated to reduce energy consumption by approximately 30% to 50% compared to traditional methods, which use around 3 kWh of energy per cubic metre of water. This technology also promises a reduction in the ecological impact of brine waste by safely reintroducing it to the sea.

This study aligns with the Maldives’ climate change and energy policies and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). It aims to ensure sustainable access to clean water, mitigate climate change impacts, and protect marine ecosystems through responsible ocean resource use.

The feasibility study represents a significant advancement in MWSC’s efforts to deliver innovative and sustainable water solutions for the Maldives, with the objective of providing reliable access to clean water for all.
