The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company is set to begin producing sufficient water to meet demand in Kulhudhuffushi City using renewable energy from next month.
The company described the project as a major step towards delivering sustainable water services across inhabited islands in the Maldives.
Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed stated that practical work to convert the system to renewable energy began last year and has now been completed. The system is currently undergoing testing, after which it is expected to operate without diesel and produce adequate water for the city from April onwards.
The project, contracted to Kanadevia Corporation, includes a reverse osmosis plant with a capacity of 500 cubic metres per day, supported by a 500 kW solar photovoltaic system and a 1,450 kWh battery storage system.
MWSC stated that 27 per cent of the project was financed through grant assistance from the Global Environment Centre Foundation. The system is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy for water production, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and oil imports while supporting climate policies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The initiative aligns with broader government policy to utilise natural resources to address climate challenges and promote sustainable development.
