Former president Mohamed Nasheed has called for the removal of border controls between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, saying open movement would deliver significant economic and social benefits to both countries.
In a post on X, Nasheed said abolishing visa requirements and work permits would strengthen trade, boost tourism and deepen people-to-people ties, fostering closer cooperation and mutual understanding between the two neighbours. He argued that free movement would better integrate the economies and societies of the two countries.
I believe removing border controls between Maldives and Sri Lanka would significantly benefit the people of both countries, fostering greater economic and social integration. Eliminating visa requirements and work permits could enhance trade, tourism, and people-to-people…— Mohamed Nasheed (@MohamedNasheed) January 8, 2026
Nasheed made the remarks amid recent comments by the Maldives’ Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, who raised concerns over the treatment of Maldivian citizens by Sri Lankan immigration authorities.
In an interview with Sri Lanka’s Daily News, the ambassador said Maldivians often face differential treatment, including longer queues, additional scrutiny and, in some cases, harsh conduct during visa procedures. He noted that students and parents applying individually were particularly affected and warned that the Maldives could consider revising its visa policy for Sri Lankan visitors if the situation persists.
