Former President Mohamed Nasheed has raised concerns over the ongoing destruction of reefs and lagoons for tourist resort development, urging for a shift towards more sustainable practices in the Maldives.

Speaking yesterday, Nasheed, a prominent advocate for environmental conservation, emphasised the need to explore alternative methods for tourism expansion. He proposed the development of uninhabited islands, currently lying vacant, as a viable solution to meet the industry’s needs without compromising fragile marine ecosystems.

“Instead of resorting to reef reclamation, we should consider utilising the abundant uninhabited islands still available,” Nasheed remarked during his statement, highlighting the urgency to cease destructive practices in the tourism sector.

Drawing attention to the importance of preserving natural habitats, Nasheed urged industry stakeholders to prioritise environmental conservation over short-term economic gains.

His remarks come amidst growing concerns over coral bleaching in the Maldives, attributed to adverse weather conditions and environmental degradation. Nasheed’s advocacy for sustainable tourism practices underscores the pressing need for action to safeguard the country’s natural assets.
