Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, who currently serves as the incumbent Central Machangolhi Member of Parliament, has announced his decision not to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for next year.

The announcement came through a message shared in a WhatsApp group for parliamentarians today.

While Nasheed himself will not be participating in the elections, his political party, the Democrats, has confirmed its intention to contest.

Nasheed resigned from his position as Parliament’s Speaker earlier this month following a no-confidence motion submitted against him by his former party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Allegations of blocking the motion persisted for weeks until Nasheed eventually resigned, subsequent to the MDP’s success in a case lodged with the Supreme Court on the matter.
