The discussions will focus on ocean safety, the blue economy, disaster risk management, investment and economic activity, as well as science, technology and women’s involvement.

Nasheed is scheduled to speak in the disaster risk management session, where he will highlight the Maldives’ role in the Indian Ocean region and discuss opportunities to expand economic activity.

He is also expected to hold meetings with senior officials from across the region during the visit.

The Indian Ocean Rim Association is an intergovernmental body comprising 23 member states and 12 dialogue partners, focused on promoting regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean.

Nasheed completed his term as the first Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum in early 2026 before transitioning to a role based in Ghana and later returning to Maldivian politics. He is currently contesting for the chairperson position of the Maldivian Democratic Party.
