The Maldivian government has initiated a comprehensive survey across the country’s atolls to identify suitable locations for new solar photovoltaic (PV) installations.

As per the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the technical assessment marks the initial phase of a broader national strategy to generate 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable energy sources by the end of 2028.

Field teams are visiting islands to inspect potential sites, evaluate land availability, and inspect building rooftops to determine their structural suitability for solar infrastructure. The survey aims to collect technical data required to implement solar power projects and accelerate the country’s transition away from imported fossil fuels.

According to government projections, shifting one-third of the nation’s electricity generation to clean energy will yield substantial economic and environmental benefits. The state estimates the transition could reduce annual fuel expenditure by USD 42 million (approximately £32 million) while lowering carbon emissions.

The current survey builds on several clean energy initiatives already underway across the archipelago. Last August, the government launched a rollout of solar hybrid systems across 25 islands, which is expected to cut annual diesel consumption by over 3 million litres and eliminate approximately 8,400 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year once operational. Additionally, work commenced in December on a 100-megawatt floating solar project managed by an external company.

The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade expects full completion of the floating solar installation by 2027.
