The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced that 294,937 individuals are eligible to vote in the upcoming local council and Women’s Development Committee elections scheduled for 4 April.
According to the commission, the voter list includes 150,410 men and 144,527 women. The provisional voter list has been made public and can be accessed through the Elections Commission website, the Government Gazette, and local council secretariats. Voters may also obtain information on their designated polling stations by sending an SMS request.
The commission has stated that any complaints or requests for corrections to the voter list must be submitted by 3:00 pm on 18 January. Political parties have been instructed to submit any objections through the Simedha Portal.
The April elections will see the selection of 626 councillors for local councils and 52 councillors for city councils. Women’s Development Committees will have the same number of members as local councils, with some islands electing three councillors and others five, depending on population size.
The number of councillors elected to city councils will vary by city. Kulhudhuffushi City and Thinadhoo City will each elect seven councillors, while Fuvahmulah City will elect nine and Addu City 11. Male’ City will elect a total of 18 councillors.
The Elections Commission has also confirmed that residents of Hirimaradhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll will vote as part of the Hanimaadhoo constituency in the upcoming elections. This decision follows the relocation of Hirimaradhoo residents to Hanimaadhoo, which was approved by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The commission stated that all 588 residents of Hirimaradhoo will now be officially recognised as residents of Hanimaadhoo for electoral purposes.
