In a meeting with school principals in Male’ city, Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu announced the decision to once again move the commencement of the academic year to January, beginning in 2025.
During the meeting with school leaders, Minister Shafeeu addressed the concerns raised by the principals. The decision to shift the academic year start date was communicated by the Minister during discussions with the school leaders.
Traditionally, the academic year in the Maldives has consistently begun in January. However, in 2021, the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government, responding to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and influenced by requests from the tourism industry, opted to postpone the academic year’s start to August.
This decision, made during the tenure of Solih, was met with dissatisfaction from a segment of the population. Notably, concerns were raised regarding the disruption this change caused, spanning from one academic year to six.
In the meeting, Minister Shafeeu indicated that further adjustments to the academic year’s start date are under consideration following a comprehensive study. The potential modifications aim to address concerns raised and ensure an effective educational environment.
