The government is moving forward with plans to establish new biosphere reserves in Lhaviyani and Laamu Atolls, as part of a wider initiative led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to protect the Maldives’ natural heritage.

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim stated that this effort supports the president’s commitment to expand the nation’s network of protected areas.

This pledge was reiterated during an event held in Gan, Laamu Atoll, to mark Environment Day. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq confirmed that preparatory studies for a biosphere reserve in Lhaviyani Atoll are already underway, while similar work in Laamu Atoll is progressing.

The president’s broader environmental agenda includes plans to create three additional biosphere reserves by the end of 2028. According to Minister Thoriq, this expansion will considerably strengthen the Maldives’ environmental protection framework, which currently comprises three biosphere reserves and 92 protected areas. He added that proposals for a third new reserve are expected to be submitted within the coming year.

Minister Thoriq underlined the urgency of environmental preservation and its close connection to the nation’s economic security. He warned that unchecked environmental degradation could harm the country’s tourism industry, leading to serious economic consequences. Emphasising a shared responsibility to protect the environment for future generations, he called for a firm commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy environment.

The ministry is also working to build greater public understanding of environmental issues. Minister Thoriq noted that information campaigns are being developed in collaboration with island and atoll councils, with schools expected to play an active role in promoting environmental stewardship.

Tourism’s importance to the national economy was another key point highlighted by Minister Thoriq. He observed that around 80 percent of visitors come to the Maldives attracted by its natural beauty, stressing the vital need to preserve the country’s environmental integrity to sustain the sector.
