A team from China Railway Design Company has begun inspecting roads in Malé and Vilimalé as part of a Chinese-funded road construction project agreed between the Maldives and China.
The project was among the agreements reached during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to China in January 2024.
China’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua on Sunday announced that a team from the company arrived in the Maldives to carry out inspections and design work related to the project.
In a post on X, the ambassador said the team would assess road conditions and prepare designs for the planned works.
“China has always prioritised the road issues that are of concern to the Maldivian people, and will work with the Maldives to improve the road drainage system to benefit people’s livelihoods,” Kong said.

Although no physical construction work has commenced under the Chinese-assisted project, inspection, research and design activities have been ongoing over the past two years. Several technical teams have previously visited the Maldives as part of the preparatory phase.
The road development initiative is expected to include improvements to roads and drainage infrastructure in the capital region.
Meanwhile, the Maldivian government is continuing work on the redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu. Construction on the road has progressed from the Local Market area towards the Sinamalé Bridge.
No timeline has yet been announced for the start of construction work under the Chinese-funded road project.
